Mask Mandate is Over
This memo applies to managers and supervisors:
California Governor Newsom issued an executive order on March 1, 2022, aligning the Cal/OSHA Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS) with the February 28, 2022, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance, allowing all Californians to remove their masks indoors, subject to a few exceptions.
Although, as it relates to COVID-related guidance, the CDPH suggests following the Emergency Temporary Standards issued by Cal/OSHA, including the mask protocol that requires unvaccinated workers to wear masks while indoors. Employers no longer have to require their employees to wear masks inside the workplace regardless of their vaccination status—the March 1 order clarifies the confusion.
Exceptions
Despite exposures and positive tests, employers should be aware that there are exceptions. There may also be local requirements that are stricter than state requirements.
Employer’s Responsibility
If an employee is not vaccinated and does not want to disclose their status, we should have them wear a mask. You are welcome to make suggestions if you don't think this will work. We should just be cautious and consistent with our policy.
Also, we are still required to provide masks upon request and follow mask protocol after exposure in the workplace.
