Policy

We are becoming increasingly reliant on cell phones/smartphones. In some cases, cell phones can be incredibly useful (for productivity apps, calendars, business calls, etc.) but they may also cause problems if used improperly or excessively.

Procedures

Excessive Cell Phone Use

It is possible for cell phones to pose a problem to employers, despite their benefits. Excessive cell phone use may lead to:

  • Work is interrupted by distractions.
  • Disturb colleagues by speaking on their phones.
  • Using company equipment inappropriately or misusing our company's internet connection can lead to security issues.
  • During working hours, we expect employees to use their cell phones in a prudent manner.

Advice about Cell Phone Use

We advise our employees to:

  • Do not abuse the privilege to use personal cell phones during company time.
  • Surf the internet, text, and talk on the phone only for a few minutes per day.
  • Turn off or silence their phones when asked.

Inappropriate Cell Phone Use

We won’t allow employees to:

  • Play games on the cell phone during working hours.
  • Use their cell phone’s camera or microphone to record confidential information.
  • Speak on their phones within earshot of co-workers and/or guests during working hours.
  • Download or upload inappropriate, illegal or obscene material on a company cell phone using a corporate internet connection.

Appropriate Cell Phone Use

Employees can benefit from using cell phones. 

Employees are allowed to use their phones:

  • To make business calls.
  • To use productivity apps such as Asana.
  • To check important messages or work emails.
  • To make brief personal calls away from the working space of colleagues.
  • Employees can use their phones during breaks or at lunch hour.

Disciplinary Consequences

We Employees may be monitored for inappropriate or excessive use of their cell phones. Our company will ban employees from using their cell phones if their phone usage decreases productivity or interferes with operations.

Employees may face severe disciplinary action up to and including termination, in cases when they:

  • Cause a security breach.
  • Violate our confidentiality policy.
  • Cause an accident by recklessly using their phones.
